Biography
Matt Bolger is a Project Leader and Principal Software Engineer in CSIRO Data61’s Decision Sciences and Analytics program based at Clayton, Victoria. Matt started his career in the computer game industry with 5 years as a programmer and lead programmer before joining CSIRO in early 2010. Matt has worked on shipped commercial products ranging from children’s games, aircraft and sport simulations to more recent work on mining industry tools, flood modelling and cross-platform workflow frameworks.
Matt is currently the project leader for a large manufacturing computer vision project with a major international customer while also working across a diverse range of research and commercial projects in areas such as particle base modelling, image analysis, additive manufacturing and human kinematics. An experienced C++ developer, Matt regularly utilises other languages when required including C#, Python, CUDA, Lua and JavaScript to name a few.
A large focus of Matt’s current work is the development and application of CSIRO’s Workspace workflow framework of which he is a lead contributor. Matt’s work has involved developing on a wide range of environments from limited resource mobile and IoT devices, game consoles and PCs to cutting edge HPCs and CSIRO’s GPU cluster using a variety of frameworks and tools.
Matt’s role at CSIRO regularly involves working directly with customers to develop and deliver solutions, presenting at conferences, facilitation of workshops, authoring papers and recruitment. Matt enjoys being part of a team having had experience working on projects with up to 30 other programmers, managing sub-teams, leading projects and developing junior staff. Matt also has a strong record of independently growing new ideas and projects. Real-time rendering, interactive visualisation, computational geometry, computer vision and GPU accelerated programming are some of the interest areas of Matt’s work.
