Biography
Dr Russ Babcock is a marine ecologist with CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere and leads research exploring the natural and human forces that shape Australia’s coastal ecosystems and sustain their integrity and value. He has broad research interests including the ecology of coral reefs and temperate kelp forests with a focus the effects of coastal development, marine conservation and trophic cascade effects.
Russ has over 40 years of research experience on coral reefs on the GBR, Western Australia and the Pacific, working closely with agencies and industry and leading multidisciplinary teams to address management needs. Current areas of active research include coral restoration and management of the crown-of-thorns starfish on the GBR. Past work has focused on the assessment of marine reserve effectiveness, fish tracking, and the distribution and structure of mesophotic reefs at Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia, as well as research on kelp forests in Western Australia and New Zealand.
