Biography

Dr Steve Barnes held the position of Research+ Science Leader with CSIRO Mineral Resources from 2014-2019 and is currently Team Leader of the Ore Systems Science team. He is an economic geologist with a background in igneous petrology, geochemistry and volcanology and is CSIRO’s expert in magmatic ore deposits. He is widely recognised as a world leader in the field of ore deposits associated with mafic and ultramafic igneous rocks, including deposits of nickel, chromium and the platinum group elements. He has published over 180 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters over a 35+ year career, accounting for close to 8000 citations. His publications cover ore deposits and their host rocks in Australia, Canada, USA, Finland, China, Russia and Brazil. He also has industry experience as an exploration geologist in Australia, Canada and the USA, primarily in exploration for platinum deposits. He regularly presents invited talks and workshops at international conferences, and was convenor of the 13th International Ni-Cu-PGE Conference held in Perth in 2016. He was the recipient in 2011 of the Gibb-Maitland Medal of the Geological Society of Australia WA Division, for services to WA geology, and the CSIRO Mineral Resources Science Achievement Award in 2018. He served on the editorial board of the premier international journal of ore deposit research, Economic Geology.
