Dr Simon Cox

Biography

Informatics applied to earth and environmental sciences has been the primary topic of Simon Cox's professional career. Starting in geophysics and mineral exploration, he moved on to focus on recognising patterns in information structures that are common across multiple applications or domains, and are thus amenable to general solutions which can be standardized at a cross-domain level. In support of this goal, he has engaged strongly in various international standardization efforts, primarily in geospatial and web communities. A consistent conceptual view has been adapted to successive technology frameworks, including XML, UML, JSON, RDF, OWL, and Linked Data. His current focus is on aligning geospatial information standards with semantic web technologies and linked open data principles, with a particular focus on governance arrangements and vocabulary publication and management.

Dr Cox is a member of the:
• Executive Board of the Earth & Space Science Informatics Focus Group, American Geophysical Union
• Technical Advisory Board, Research Data Alliance
• Architecture Board, Open Geospatial Consortium
• Planning Committee, Open Geospatial Consortium
• Australian Government Linked Data Working Group
• W3C/OGC Spatial Data on the Web Working Group

He has served as councillor or on the steering or advisory committee for:
• International Association of Mathematical Geology
• Commission for Geoscience Information
• Ocean Data Interoperability Platform
• Dublin Core Metadata Initiative

Dr Cox is the author or co-author of over 40 journal articles, 30 technical specifications and international standards, and 150 conference papers. He was awarded the 2006 Gardels Medal by the Open Geospatial Consortium, and was selected to present the 2013 Leptoukh Lecture for the American Geophysical Union.
