Dr Daniel East
Group Leader Advanced Manufacturing and Metals.
Biography
As the Group Lead of Advanced Manufacturing and Metals at CSIRO, I oversee a team of 30+ researchers who work on cutting-edge projects in additive manufacturing, alloy development, large format robotic additive, and continuous powder compaction. With a PhD in Materials Engineering from Monash University and over five years of experience in leadership positions , I have a strong background in materials science, production system development, mechanical testing, and non-equilibrium metallic systems.
My mission is to transfer the technology of additive manufacturing to the commercial environment, by collaborating with industrial partners and setting long-term research agendas that aim to expand the applications and benefits of 3D printing. I have worked on materials solutions for extreme environments, such as hypersonic airframes, mining, and space applications, with a special focus on materials used for in situ resource utilization on lunar and Martian environments. I have also been a visiting researcher at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where I gained valuable insights and connections in the space industry. I am passionate about advancing the science and practice of Additive Manufacturing and enabling innovation and sustainability in various sectors.
