Biography

I have the privilege of working in the Antenna and Receiver Technologies Group at CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science. This group of twenty includes electrical and mechanical engineers, technicians and machinists that conceive, design, and build receivers for both our own telescopes and those of other leading international institutions.

With degrees in science (maths and physics) and engineering, I started in FM broadcast transmitters and microwave links, moving to satellite ground stations before joining the antenna group at CSIRO in 1992. There I focussed on antenna metrology and waveguide component design and highlights included the design of a dual channel rotary joint for a meteorological radar and leading a comprehensive upgrade of the hardware and software in our measurement facilities.

In 2011 I completed a PhD in the emerging field of Phased Array Feeds (PAFs) for radio telescopes. I continued to work in PAF research and development, characterizing their performance and supporting the design of the now very successful Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). ASKAP, now a fully operational science instrument, proved the viability and effectiveness of PAF technology and its novelty has been recognised in several Australian Engineering and design awards.

In 2016 I took on the leadership position where I focused on supporting our team, providing technical leadership, particularly at a system level, and connecting with the international radio astronomy community. With the growing interest in space from CSIRO and the Australian Government, I have also launched a project looking at using radio astronomy techniques for space debris detection and tracking (Space Situational Awareness or SSA). In 2021, handing over the leadership to a very capable colleague, I am now focussing on system design, project management, and some technical work of my own.

I have authored or co-authored over 80 research papers and reports and hold a patent. These have been cited more than 1200 times. I also serve as a reviewer for the IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation as well as other publications and conferences.

Other Interests

My research and technical interests are in:
* radiotelescope design
* practical use of uncertainties in measurements
* phased array feeds
* antenna measurements
* receiver noise temperature measurements

I am also interested in technical team leadership, management of high tech projects and increasing staff gender and background diversity in engineering.
