Biography

After completing a BSc(Hons) degree in Botany & Zoology at The Australian National University (ANU), Mike worked briefly as a technician and in government before completing an MSc by research on nematode ecology and spatial analysis at ANU, then a PhD on termite ecology in Kakadu National Park at The Research School of Biological Sciences and CSIRO Wildlife & Ecology. He then worked as a Senior Research Fellow at The Natural History Museum in London, leading the terrestrial and freshwater aquatic nematode research team, before taking up his present position as research scientist at CSIRO,.
He has worked on nematodes in every continent on earth, except South America, and studied behaviour, physiology, taxonomy and ecology of all types of nematodes—terrestrial, freshwater aquatic and marine; plant-parasitic, free-living and associated with invertebrates. He has used and developed advanced techniques in systematic, genomic and ecological analysis. He has received $5m in direct grant funding since 1991.
He has published more than 60 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals and over 70 general interest and other publications. He has given over 50 oral presentations at conferences and scientific meetings, almost half of which were invited and plenary talks. He has supervised 8 PhD students, and 4 Honours students, as well as Summer Students and school work experience students. He has co-presented a biannual course on “Nematode Identification & Techniques” in Australia since 1999 and in SE Asia since 2011. He holds an adjunct professorship at Charles Sturt University and is visiting fellow at ANU.
He is President of the Australasian Association of Nematologists, a councillor for the International Federation of Nematology Societies and country representative for the European Society of Nematologists. He won a Quarantine Certificate of Commendation in 2004 for “contributing to the quarantine protection of Australia’s agricultural industries and unique environment”, and a CSIRO Award for Research Innovation and Achievement in 2009.
