Biography
Dr Jorge Peña Arancibia is a research scientist in CSIRO Land and Water, Water Resources Management Program. He joined CSIRO Land and Water in 2005 as a research intern and continued as a research officer until 2008. At CSIRO, he was part of the team that delivered the Murray-Darling Basin Sustainable Yields project. After completing his PhD with the Environmental Modelling and Monitoring Research Group at King’s College London, University of London, he re-joined CSIRO in 2011 as a research officer to work on the Australian Water Resource Assessment and was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship in 2012 followed by a research scientist appointment in 2015.
His research focuses on quantifying current irrigation water use through satellite-derived evapotranspiration estimates and hydrological models. Using global change data (e.g. population growth, climate change) and modelling, areas with current and potential future water quantity issues are identified, analysing past and future climatic and biophysical time-series to understand drivers of hydrological change, and implications for water, food and energy security.
Jorge is/was a key contributor to the following CSIRO projects:
Deputy project leader and in charge of the hydrological modelling in the Tacna Drought Management Plan (DMP) project in Peru, where he coordinates and engages customers and key stakeholders (ongoing).
CSIRO lead of a team of five researchers of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) to deliver crop mapping and irrigation water use (ongoing) as part of SDIP II (Sustainable Development Portfolio Phase II) Bangladesh.
Crop mapping and irrigation water use in SDIP II Pakistan.
Remote sensing research and scenario modelling in the flood modelling component in the Northern Australia Water Resource Assessment Project (NAWRA).
Led the river system modelling in the Bioregional Assessments (BA) Programme in consultation with state water agencies, uncertainty analysis and supervised two CSIRO staff.
