Biography
Dr Qingdong Qu is a Principal Research Engineer at the Sustainable Mining Technologies Research Program, CSIRO Mineral Resources. His research focuses on developing innovative engineering solutions to various mining problems concerning safety and environment. These include ground control, mine methane management, methane emission reduction through optimal drainage systems and goaf gas control. He conducts integrated mine-scale measurement and monitoring of rock and fluid (water and gas) behaviours, numerical modelling and theoretical analysis using interdisciplinary knowledge.
Dr Qu has been leading the Mining Geomechanics team comprising six researchers since 2017. The team's goal is to develop scientific understanding and practical solutions to geomechanics related mining problems, including ground failure, mine water, mine methane, mine solid waste, mine closure and rehabilitation. Over the years, the team has established a world-class numerical modelling capability in geomechanical modelling, fracture mechanics modelling, and coupled Thermal-Hydro-Mechanical-Chemical porous flow modelling. The team has two unique in-house numerical codes: COSFLOW and FRACOD, and is a key contributor to MOOSE development.
Dr Qu joined CSIRO in 2009 after he obtained PhD degree in mining engineering in the China University of Mining and Technology. His research has made a sustained contribution to advance existing knowledge in mining science and engineering. He had been a key member for a number of large externally-funded projects, including a major CMATSP project funded by the Australian Government ($3M in collaboration with Glencore), an APP project ($2.2M), three deep mining projects (totalling $3M) funded by Huainan Mining Group of China and several ACARP projects.
