Principal Research Engineer, Team Leader
Biography
Ronnie Taib is a Principal Research Engineer, passionate about getting machines and
computer systems to adapt to humans, through optimal decision support, improved
processes and safer environments. He managed projects and developed systems and
platforms characterised by the development and integration of low maturity technologies
with complex output, requiring a strong can-do attitude.
Ronnie spent six years in commercial research at Alcatel Research and Motorola Labs,
where he developed strong software architecture and development skills. In the following
ten years, his focus moved to more fundamental research on understanding and measuring
human cognitive load. A generalist engineer and curious about the world by nature, most
of his projects are applied to industrial problems, ranging from infrastructure,
transport, cybersecurity, Earth observations to aeronautical manufacturing. His current
research revolves around data analytics involving real-world complex, heterogeneous
(incl. spatiotemporal), noisy and sparse datasets.
One of Ronnie's core strengths is understanding the needs of the industry, and matching
them against existing research capabilities, while speaking the industry jargon. As
such, he has managed a number of projects and teams over the years, yet keeping a
technical expert role. Ronnie loves to foster people's skills through teaching and
mentoring, and as a community-oriented person, he favours projects with philanthropic or
community benefits.
Other Interests
Ronnie regularly supervises Masters, Honours, undergrad and work experience students, and had the chance to supervise over 60 students over the years. He gives annual guest lectures at the University of Sydney in System design, and has been a STEM Professional in Schools since 2010. Ronnie loves running or rogaining in the Australian bush.
