Biography
Dr. Warish Ahmed is a principal research scientist in CSIRO Environment. He provides targeted solutions to identify the point and non-point sources of microbial contaminants in catchment and recreational waters.
In addition, he has expertise in data analysis, interpretation and guidance to clients and collaborators. Warish is working with utilities and local governments and transferring these application-based tools to solve real-world environmental issues.
His primary research areas and/or interest include:
1. Wastewater Virology: Monitoring enteric and enveloped viruses in wastewater to assess public health risks and inform surveillance strategies.
2. Emerging Contaminants: Investigating antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), high-risk pathogens, and their implications for human health and environmental safety.
3. Microbial Source Tracking (MST): Applying rapid molecular-based methods to identify sources of microbial contamination in environmental waters.
4. Microbial Ecology: Characterizing microbial communities in water resources using next-generation sequencing to uncover ecological processes affecting water, wastewater, and sediment quality.
5. Pathogen Detection Methods: Developing and validating microbial techniques for detecting and quantifying pathogens in wastewater, stormwater, roof-captured rainwater, and recreational waters.
6. Environmental Persistence Studies: Evaluating the decay rates of MST markers and pathogens in various environmental matrices to better understand exposure risks.
7. Regulatory Microbiology: Conducting clinical and environmental microbiology testing in compliance with national and international regulatory standards.
