Biography
Dr Brankovic is a Research Scientist with CSIRO Australian e-Health Research Centre. In her role Dr Brankovic is applying her expertise in mathematical modelling, complex algorithms, artificial intelligence and engineering to the development of new medical devices and decision support tools, improving the provision of healthcare and changing the lives of patients.
During her postdoc at the University of Queensland Dr Brankovic has contributed to the development of the computational element of a portable, affordable, and accessible novel microwave-based portable head scanner for stroke detection and classification. Aida is primary and secondary inventor of two patents licensed to a third party. The technology has already passed through the first clinical trials and is now in the second stage of prototype development with the project’s industry partner.
Her current interests include wide range of topics in data analysis and AI including nonlinear model identification, randomized algorithms, AI-powered real-time decision making, explainable & responsible AI. She is recipients of number of awards among which are an Early-Career Advance Queensland Research Fellowship (AQRF) in 2020, the Global Australian GLOBAL TALENT Award finalist (2022) supported by Australian government for her contribution to Australia’s reputation as a world leader in medical innovation. Her work on the reliability of XAI has been acknowledged with the Best Paper Award by International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) at Medinfo 2023. Aida is the winner of 2025 Women in Technology (WiT) Future Tech Star Award and the finalist for the 2025 WiT Excellence in Research Award. In 2025 she received the Springer Nature Editor of Distinction Award 2025 in the category Editorial Contribution Award that recognises contribution to upholding research integrity in peer-review process and ensuring scientific accuracy, efficient, constructive and fair the peer review process. Aida is chief inventor and coinventor of 2 US patents that are licensed to the industry partner and Editorial Board Member of Nature Scientific Report. Her research and achievements have been featured in the press such as 9News, The Weekly Times, The Daily Telegraph.
