Biography
Dr Jane Bowen is a Senior Research Scientist and Dietitian within the Nutrition & Health Program. The program aims to improve the health and wellness of Australians through nutrition innovation, in partnership with food and health industries.
Jane’s research experience spans both large complex clinical trials, as well as community interventions. In addition she translates research outcomes into nutrition and health programs that are active in the Australian community, such as Healthy Kids Menu initiative (healthykidsmenu.com.au) and the Impromy meal replacement program (imrpomy.com). Such programs are helping to combat the prevalence of overweight and obesity in Australia by improving the food supply/food service, and via programs that support individuals to make dietary change for health, wellbeing and weight management.
She conducts her clinical work through the CSIRO Nutrition and Health Research Clinic (SAHMRI, Adelaide, South Australia) across a broad range of projects that focus on food, dietary patterns and programs for metabolic health and weight management. In doing so, Jane has worked in partnership with the food industry, state and federal governments, community organisations and NGOs. She was project manager of the $3.7 million 2007 Australian National Children’s Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey.
Dr Bowen is an author of the CSIRO Wellbeing Plan for Kids, and contributing author of the CSIRO Healthy Heart Diet and the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet, which has been translated into 17 languages and sold over 1 million copies in Australia. She has also developed health resources used extensively across the Australian health system. For example, the Get Set 4 Life booklet is distributed to all Australian children during their 4-year-old health check. It aims to help families establish healthy lifestyle habits from a young age.
Dr Bowen is an accomplished media spokesperson and presenter, and is frequently invited to present on her research findings, nutrition and health, innovation and women in STEM careers.
Jane is a member of the CSIROseven (http://seven.csiro.au/) and was part of the team awarded a CSIRO Medal for Research Excellence for the development of the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet.
