Research Scientist and Group Leader

Research activities
Jeff Baldock's research activities include:
1) Quantification of stocks, composition and fluxes of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous in soil organic matter, rates of carbon and nutrient cycling and impacts on greenhouse gas emissions.
2) Identification of the soil properties and environmental conditions important to defining the biological stability and potential sequestration of organic carbon and nitrogen in natural ecosystems.
3) Quantification of the functions of organic matter in soils and development of a capacity to predict the implications of management options on the level of expression of soil organic matter functions.
4) Characterisation of the chemical composition of organic carbon and nitrogen in natural organic materials found in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and definition of the changes in chemical composition that occur during decomposition.
5) Development mid-infrared spectroscopy (MIR) in combination with partial least squares regression (PLSR) as a means to provide rapid and cost effective measures of soil carbon contents and composition.

Research Management Activities
Dr. Baldock leads the Soil Carbon and Nutrient Cycling group in the CSIRO Agriculture Flagship. He has supervised CSIRO staff and led a range of internally and externally funded projects ranging from complex multi-agency through to single organisation projects. External support has been obtained from the Grains Research and Development Corporation, the Department of Agriculture (and its predecessors) and the Department of Environment (and its predecessors).
