Biography
Lev is a principal research scientist in the Environmental Genomics team in CSIRO's Coasts program. His current research aims to better understand the status and trajectory of marine and estuarine microbial ecosystems. He is developing and applying genomics methods and tools to study the composition and function of marine and estuarine ecosystems and to detect biological threat taxa.
Lev completed his PhD at the Biological Research Centre of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, working on thermotolerant and thermophilic methane oxidising bacteria and their biotechnological application in methanol production and in biodegradation. Following his PhD, he spent three years at the Department of Biotechnology of the University of Szeged in Hungary. In 2000 he moved to the Austrian Research Centers/Austrian Institute of Technology where he pioneered the development and application of microarray technology for microbial diagnostics in environmental and food applications. He joined CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere in 2010 to provide scientific leadership to the then recently established Environmental Genomics Team, which he lead between 2014 and 2020.
