Biography

Dr Mohan Baruwal Chhetri is a Principal Research Scientist at CSIRO's Data61, where he leads the Human-Machine Collaboration for Cybersecurity research theme. With 19 years of R&D experience. Dr Baruwal Chhetri is passionate about developing intelligent solutions that enhance human decision-making in complex cyber-physical-social ecosystems. His work encompasses a range of approaches, from autonomous AI decision-making to AI-augmented human expertise and collaborative human-AI problem-solving. Currently, his primary focus is on harnessing these innovative solutions to strengthen cybersecurity defences at the individual, organisational, and societal levels. Additionally, Dr Baruwal Chhetri is interested in exploring the ethical, social, and security implications of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, extended reality, and quantum.

Dr Baruwal Chhetri holds a Master of Information Technology (MIT) from Monash University and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from Swinburne University of Technology. Before joining CSIRO, he served as a lecturer at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia. He is a prolific researcher, having published over 100 research papers on a range of topics including cybersecurity, self-adaptive and autonomic systems, cloud computing, and more. He is an IEEE Senior Member and on the Review Board of IEEE Transactions on Services Computing. He regularly reviews for many journals and conferences. Since 2020, he has served as a founding PC Co-Chair of the International Workshop on Human-Centric Software Engineering and Cybersecurity, held alongside the Automated Software Engineering Conference (ASE), a premier research forum for automated software engineering.

Since joining CSIRO, he has led several strategic research projects supported by the Tech4HSE Program, Cyber Security CRC, the Next Generation Technologies Fund, the Collaborative Intelligence FSP, the Responsible Innovation FSP and the Quantum Technologies FSP. He was Research Manager for the Software and Computational Systems (SCS) Research Program from October 2023 to October 2024. He is the Coordinator of the SCS Biannual Awards since 2022.
