Biography
Dr Robert Barlow is a highly respected research scientist at CSIRO, with over 25 years of experience in microbiology and food safety. His professional journey has centred on enhancing the integrity and safety of Australia’s food systems, particularly within the red meat industry. He has led national programs focused on the detection and management of Shiga toxin–producing Escherichia coli (STEC) and antimicrobial resistance, providing critical data to underpin food safety policy and market access. With a PhD in Microbiology from the University of Queensland, Dr Barlow has applied his scientific expertise to real-world challenges, helping industry partners implement evidence-based solutions for microbial risk management.
Beyond microbiological research, Dr Barlow has played a leading role in digital transformation across agri-food systems. As the Research Director for CSIRO’s Food Program in the Agriculture & Food Research Unit, he has spearheaded initiatives that integrate sensors, genomics, and data analytics into continuous assurance systems—reducing regulatory compliance costs and improving product traceability. His work has influenced national food safety standards and contributed to international dialogues on innovation in food production and export systems. Dr Barlow’s blend of scientific rigor and industry collaboration continues to position him as a thought leader in the development of smarter, safer, and more resilient food supply chains.
