Biography
Russell joined the CSIRO in 1993 as a research assistant. He now plays a diverse role within Marine Resources and Industry (MRI) across a wide range of projects. His skill set spans purely technical outputs (such as the innovative gene tag tool) to highly regarded scientific outputs (as evidenced by his publication record). Russell has been the key figure in the development and publication of standardised protocols for handling and tagging various finfish and elasmobranch species, which has become a growth area for CSIRO. He also maintains strong links with State, Federal, and local government agencies, industry stakeholders and project collaborators across his research portfolio. He enjoys a growing national and international reputation for excellence and unbiased scientific reporting, and has been serving on the editorial board of The Open Fish Science Journal since 2007. Russell’s extensive knowledge of marine animal tagging procedures and processes has resulted in formal collaborations with external partners and ad hoc requests for his assistance. His expertise in animal tagging was largely responsible for his invitation to be a founding member of the National IMOS Animal Tracking Facility’s Data Committee.
