Dr Sam Behrens is an experienced Senior Research Engineer and Project Manager and is based at CSIRO’s Newcastle Energy Centre. Dr Behrens research is mainly focused on adding intelligence to the interaction of energy systems within the electricity residential distribution network - in particular the grid integration of solar photovoltaics, electric vehicles and battery storage. He has a broad experience base in software and hardware development, mechatronics, control systems engineering and project management.

Dr Behrens has a history of delivering innovation from research translation to commercialization. For example, Dr Behrens was the project and technical lead for CSIRO and AMP Capital’s Evergen business venture, and CTO for CSIRO's Cloud180CAM spin-off company. Dr Behrens has previously worked with Defence clients, CEC, AEMC, NREL, DSTO (now called DSTG), University of Michigan, Duke University and the University of Newcastle. He is also the co-author of two book chapters, several patent applications and more than 60 peer-reviewed publications, which have collected 2092 citations and an h-index of 23 (Google Scholar).
