Biography

Dr Ben Cao obtained his PhD in Organic Chemistry in 2011 from the University of Melbourne (Bio21 Institute) under the supervision of Professor Spencer Williams working on the total synthesis of mycobacterial glycolipids as novel agonists of natural killer T cells. He then joined CSIRO as an OCE Postdoctoral Fellow within the Stem Cell and Organic Chemistry groups working on the synthesis and development of small molecule hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) mobilisation agents.

In 2017, Ben was appointed adjunct Senior Research Fellow at the Australian and Regenerative Medicine Institute (ARMI, Monash University) and Team Leader of the Cell Biology Assays team in the Biomedical Manufacturing Program at CSIRO were he led several strategic and industry projects, focused primarily on the development of bespoke cell assays for evaluating and validating novel therapeutics.

Ben is currently Group Leader of the Biologics Product Development Group in Biomedical Manufacturing. In this role, he oversees a diverse range of capabilities including cell line development, biologics production, biologics purification and analytics to support process development, scale-up and translation of complex biologics including vaccines and antibody-based therapeutics for human and animal heath.
