Biography
Dr Garry Cook has more than 30 years experience in researching the sustainable management of northern Australian landscapes, with an emphasis on the role of fire in savanna dynamics and landscape processes.
Current activities
Leading the Savanna Soil and Vegetation Dynamics Team, Dr Garry Cook is a Senior Principal Research Scientist with CSIRO Land and Water in Darwin, Northern Territory. Dr Cook has published extensively on many aspects of the dynamics and management of the northern Australian environment. Currently his research addresses the interaction of frequent fires with vegetation, carbon stocks and greenhouse gas emissions.
Dr Cook has written several comprehensive reviews of the history of land management science and policy in the Northern Territory. These reviews ensure that scientific research, land management decisions and policy directions can take full account of the legacy and lessons of past research.
