Mariana is a biologist with postgraduate degrees in Plant Ecology (MSc), Plant Ecophysiology (PhD) and Education (Licentiate) whose research focuses on biosecurity to positively impact the environment, industry and community.

Her research and applied work have spanned multiple fields in biology, giving Mariana a broad perspective of the current issues and methods in the field, and allowing her to engage with various stakeholders, including industry partners. Her practical and theoretical experience span multiple ecosystems across Australia and Brazil.

More recently, her position as a Biosecurity Researcher allowed Mariana to delve into biosecurity pathways and surveillance, where her strong statistical knowledge was applied. Mariana has been a director of the board of the Australian Plant Biosecurity Science Foundation since 2018 and an adjunct research fellow for the Harry Butler Institute since 2021.

While previously the subjects of her research included vertebrates, invertebrates, plants and pathogens, at CSIRO Mariana will focus on invasive plants.

Research interests: invasive species ecology, invasive species management, biosecurity, pathways, surveillance, monitoring, risk assessment, plant ecophysiology, education, training.
