Biography
Dr Estavillo joined CSIRO Plant Industry in 2013 after a six-year appointment as a Research Associate at the ARC Centre of Excellence in Plant Energy Biology based at the ANU.
While at the ANU, Dr Estavillo’s research focused on plant physiology and molecular biology of cell signalling and plant water stress responses. He also contributed to undergraduate education and training programs. Dr Estavillo’s scientific and outreach work resulted in several papers in high-profile journals and was recognised by several awards. He is also ANU Visiting Fellow.
Dr Estavillo first completed undergraduate studies in plant physiology and molecular biology at the National University of Rosario, Argentina. Following his undergraduate degree, he obtained a PhD in the same area from the University of Florida (USA), working on physiology and molecular biology of the Hydrilla verticillata, the first single-cell C4 inducible system ever described.
Other Interests
Photosynthesis, Plant Phenotyping, Abiotic Stress Responses
Professional Areas
Current Roles
-
Senior Research Scientist (2014 -2022)
Research scientist working on several aspects of photosynthesis, plant physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology, both in the field and in the lab. My research goal is to optimize plant growth by improving resource allocation (i.e., carbon capture and partitioning) into harvestable organs to secure food production. Our Team works with crops and model plants to understand the main drivers and limitations of growth under both optimal and sub-optimal environmental conditions. -
Future Crops Communications Team (2022)
Lead the strategy to communicate and disseminate #futurecrops research.
