Biography

Phillip Fawell completed a BSc with a double chemistry major at the University of Western Australia in 1983, before transferring to Murdoch University for Honours and PhD studies. In 1989 he commenced a CSIRO postdoctoral fellowship to examine gold adsorbing resins, then in 1991 joined Materials Research Laboratory (DSTO) in Melbourne to work with fibre-reinforced phenolic composites. He returned to Perth and CSIRO in early 1993 with the start of the Parker Centre, primarily to develop techniques for flocculant characterisation. His research activities also included aggregate characterisation and flocculation mechanisms. As leader of the Parker Centre's Solid-Liquid Handling area from 1996, Phillip's research led to a number of tools and methods adopted within the AMIRA P266 "Improving Thickener Technology" projects. He has led a number of the associated company-specific studies and other flocculation projects.

In 2000 he became Topic Leader for all flocculation activities within AMIRA P266D, which continued for P266E (2005-2008) and P266F (2008-2011), in which he also led Technology Transfer and was Research Coordinator. He was Project Leader and Research Coordinator for P266G (2012-2015). In the area of technology transfer, he produced an online thickener appraisal tool, a range or process models, short training videos and an online knowledge base (including problem-solving resources). He has also delivered training on flocculation and thickening around the world, and has now had several book chapters published in these areas.

As Team Leader for "Suspensions and Tailings" his responsibility for tailings and thickening has been expanded to include multi-phase flow, instrument/sensor development and most recently ex situ mineral carbonation through the CarbonLock Future Science Platform (FSP).
