Fang Huang joined the Geoscience Analytics team, CSIRO Mineral Resources (Kensington, WA) as a research scientist in January 2020. Before that, he was a postdoc researcher in data science and machine learning at Tetherless World Constellation, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (NY, USA) between 2017 and 2019. He received his Earth science PhD degree in September 2017 from the Johns Hopkins University (MD, USA), with a focus of research in thermodynamic modeling of fluid-rock reactions at upper mantle conditions.

With an interdisciplinary background, he conducts research using data analytics and machine learning methods to gain knowledge and find trends and patterns from a variety of geochemical, biological, and mineralogical data sets. His latest projects at CSIRO focuses building machine learning models with drill core hyperspectral, geochemical/mineralogical data to improve the efficiency of field exploration.

Fang also does research in thermodynamic modeling. He has been working on the Deep Earth Water (DEW) model since 2012. The DEW model enables the calculation of the speciation and solubility of aqueous fluids in equilibrium with rock at pressures and temperatures up to 6 GPa and 1200 C. He is interested in mantle metasomatism, diamond formation, deep hydrocarbons and element cycling in the subduction-zone and upper mantle involving fluids.
