Biography
Gavin is a molecular plant pathologist and mycologist. His research interests encompass the identification, evolution and population biology of invasive fungal plant pathogens. This is achieved through the use of DNA-based molecular tools complemented by conventional morphological taxonomy. Gavin has undertaken such research across several sectors including academia, government and commercial biotechnology.
At CSIRO, Gavin's research was delivered into the Temperate Weeds Team where he identified, developed and deployed host-specific fungal pathogens of invasive weeds in Australia. More recently, as part of the Plant Health Diagnostics team, Gavin's research has been focused on molecular diagnostics of endemic and exotic plant pathogens of biosecurity concern to Australian plant-based industries and Australia's unique flora. For this, his research aims to develop innovative diagnostic platforms and technologies to detect plant pathogens sooner and more accurately.
