Dr Mark Hemer

Dr Mark Hemer is a Research Director (Climate, Atmosphere and Ocean Interaction) and Senior Principal Research Scientist in the Environment Business Unit of CSIRO. Dr Hemer has over 20 years of Met-Ocean research experience, with application across a broad range of public and private sector challenges.

Mark's science leadership and research management experience spans a range of climate and blue economy initiatives, having prior roles leading CSIRO's Climate Innovation Hub; Coordinating CSIRO's involvement in the Australian Climate Service (a partnership including CSIRO, the Bureau of Meteorology, Geoscience Australia and the Australian Bureau of Statistics), and being the inaugural lead of the Ocean Renewable Energy Systems program of Australia's Blue Economy Co-operative Research Centre. He has held research roles in Australia, the US, Japan, the Netherlands and Ireland.

Mark maintains a number of national and international roles, including Chair of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Coordinated Ocean Wave CLimate Project (COWCLIP) which aims to improve understanding of surface wave climate variability and change and the role of waves in the coupled climate system; and member of the WMO Standing Committee on Marine Meteorology and Oceanographic Services (SC-MMO), and Expert Team on Coastal and Emergency Response (ET-CER). He was a contributing author to four High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy white papers, including the 2019 and 2023 'Ocean as a solution to climate change' report, a lead author on the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (Oceans, cryosphere and sea-level change), and has been a contributing author to the IPCC Fourth (2007) and Fifth Assessment Reports (2013), and Special Reports on Oceans and Cryosphere (2019) and Extremes (2012). Mark has published over 100 peer-reviewed research papers, and more than 70 other reports and articles.
