Mohanraj Karunanithi obtained his doctorate in Biomedical Engineering at the University of New South Wales. He has worked in cardiac research for 10 years on ventricular function. Dr. Karunanithi established a state-of-the art cardiac research lab, featuring surgical facility, for the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, which he managed and coordinated the research for 9 years. He has 5 years experience in leading medical industries (such as Agilent technologies/HP Medical and Philips Medical Systems) leading customer service delivery and Medical IT engineering operations for the Asia Pacific region. He joined the Australian eHealth Research Centre (AEHRC), CSIRO in 2004 as a Research Team leader during which he established the mobile health research team. He is currently a Group Leader at the AEHRC, CSIRO coordinating and directing research projects, scientists and capabilities, and students.
Dr. Karunanithi developed the vision and strategy for his group, to position the CSIRO as a world leader in health services science over the next decade. He has led and managed a team of researchers and engineers to create and translate cutting edge research to world leading integrated mobile mobile-/tele- health applications in the management of chronic diseases, aged care and independently living. He has built strategic alliance with international partners for collaboration in aged care, mobile health, and cardiac modelling drawing on the expertise of internal and external scientists/clinicians.
The impact of his group's research has included the first validated home-based care delivery model for cardiac rehabilitation (setting the framework for mobile health projects in AEHRC), and resulting in the eHealth program’s first spin-out, Cardihab. The design and development of a state-of-the-art care-in-place platform has drawn wide interest from the aged care and health industries. His groups research has attracted a large number of successful grants and received multiple awards.
Dr. Karunanithi has been recognised nationally and internationally, being invited as key note speaker, as well as presenting his research and participating on panels at several conferences.
He is a senior member of the largest biomedical engineering society, IEEE Engineering Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS). He is also the founding and current chair of the IEEE EMBS chapter in Queensland, Australia. Dr. Karunanithi has internationally recognised scientific inputs which include over 150 peer-reviewed publications in high impact journals and 3 patents.
