Kewei received his Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography from Xiamen University, China. During his study, he spent two years in Hobart as a visiting student with the CSIRO sea level team. His Ph.D. work compares regional sea level changes due to external forcing and natural climate variability, with a particular focus on the large-scale decadal-to-multidecadal sea level variability in the Pacific.

After completing his study, he worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine, studying the inter-basin connections between the Atlantic and Pacific.

He is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow with the Centre for Southern Hemisphere Oceans Research since February 2018. His research focuses on the Southern Ocean sea level change and the associated ocean heat uptake and redistribution.
