Biography

Laurent Langhi is a Principal Researcher with the Digital Geoscience and Reservoir Team in the CSIRO Energy Program. He has over two decades of experience in subsurface geoscience, structural geology, geomechanics, multiscale geological modelling and reservoir characterization. His work focuses on the integration of geological and geophysical data to build predictive models of sedimentary basins, supporting resource exploration, geological storage, and risk assessment.

Laurent leads and contributes to nationally and internationally significant projects in energy and environmental geoscience, including conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon assessment, CO₂ storage, hydrogen resource evaluation, and subsurface integrity for waste disposal.

His expertise spans fault seal analysis, basin evolution, seismic interpretation, and the geomechanical controls on fluid migration in the subsurface. He is a strong advocate for cross-disciplinary collaboration and the application of advanced modelling and AI tools to improve decision-making in the resources and energy sectors.

Current Roles

  • Principal Research Scientist
I lead and contribute to multidisciplinary research focused on subsurface characterisation and geological modelling. My work supports a range of national priorities in low-emissions technologies, particularly in the areas of carbon capture and storage (CCS), hydrogen exploration, underground gas storage, and waste disposal. My role involves designing and managing research projects that integrate geophysical, geological, and geomechanical data to assess the structure, evolution, and resource potential of sedimentary basins. In addition to technical leadership, I engage with government, industry, and regulatory stakeholders to translate scientific outcomes into applied solutions for secure and sustainable use of the subsurface.
