Biography

Dr Liming Lu is currently a Senior Principal Scientist leading CSIRO R&D in iron ore agglomeration and high temperature behaviour of iron ore agglomerates in blast furnace and other alternative ironmaking processes. Liming was featured in the World’s Top 2% Scientists List published by Stanford University in 2020 and ranked at 43 out of 27568 scientists listed in the field of mining and metallurgy. Liming is also the recipient of 2022 CSIRO Mineral Resources Lifetime Achievement Award, 2019 Sawamura Award from the Iron and Steel Institute of Japan (ISIJ) and 2003 Josef S Kapitan Award from American Iron and Steel Society (AIST).

Dr Lu received his PhD degree in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of New South Wales, Australia, in 2001 and has more than 30 years’ R&D experience in the characterisation, processing and evaluation of iron ores, metallurgical coals and light metals. His research interests cover high temperature processing of minerals and wastes, thermodynamics and kinetics of pyrometallurgical processes, environmental issues in pyrometallurgical processes, and alloy solidification.

Background

After finishing his PhD study in 2001, Dr Lu received a Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) to continue his research at the University of Toronto, Canada. Liming joined CSIRO as a Senior Scientist in March 2005 to lead the CSIRO's R&D in iron ore sintering. His responsibility was later expanded to cover the research in iron ore pelletising, cokemaking and high temperature behaviour of ironmaking burden materials. Before joining CSIRO, Liming had worked as a research academic at the University of Queensland, Australia, for two and half years, to develop novel grain refiners for magnesium alloys and eutectic modifiers for Al-Si casting alloys.

Dr Lu is the editor of a 20-chapter book entitled “Iron ore – mineralogy, processing and environmental sustainability” published by Elsevier in 2015 and the lead editor of a special issue on the biomass materials for metallurgical applications for Advances in Materials Science and Engineering published by Hindawi in 2018. He has also published in a broad area from material characterisation to mineral processing to pyrometallurgy including 9 book chapters and more than 153 papers. He was invited to give plenary/keynote speeches at 16 international conferences and work as a co-chair for one international conference and session chair at 13 international conferences.

Dr Lu is also an international technical expert of ISO Technical Committee TC102/SC3, which is reviewing and developing international standards for the physical testing of iron ore. In addition, Liming has served as a Review Board Member for Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A and Minerals, Editorial Board member for Ironmaking and Steelmaking and Advisory Board member for the Iron and Steel Institute of Japan, as well as a regular reviewer for Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A and B, Ironmaking and Steelmaking, Powder Technology, and many other leading international journals.

Over the years, Dr Lu has collaborated closely with his peers around the world and delivered invited lectures at many leading international research organizations, universities and steel and mining companies. Liming was appointed as an Adjunct Professor by Central South University in 2011, Kunming University of Science and Technology in 2012, Liaoning University of Science and Technology in 2014 and Shanghai University in 2017.
