Biography

Anthony Nguyen is a Research Team Leader and Principal Research Scientist from the Australian e-Health Research Centre (AEHRC), CSIRO’s e-Health research program within the Health and Biosecurity business unit. He leads the Health Text Analytics team within the Health Informatics group to build a clinically focused Natural Language Processing (NLP) research program and deliver innovative software solutions for automating the analysis of unstructured, narrative medical records. In partnership with healthcare providers, he creates value from health data to deliver improved patient outcomes, health system performance and productivity.

His team develops and applies advanced artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to analyse clinical text for the purpose of creating value via interoperability, decision support & reporting across all healthcare sectors. Techniques include the combination of text mining, statistical machine learning and information retrieval with clinical terminology (SNOMED CT) semantics to enhance clinical natural language understanding.

Anthony oversees the delivery of projects from conception through to technology transfer and adoption by healthcare partners to support clinical decision-making and public health surveillance. His medical text analytics solutions have been deployed at the Qld Cancer Register for the real-time processing and analysis of state-wide histopathology and radiology reports, and death certificates. Further, AI solutions integrated with visual dashboard analytics for human-in-the-loop interaction were developed for use by Federal and State government agencies to help respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. Interoperable healthcare application prototypes to provide AI test result and other antimicrobial stewardship decision support in Emergency Departments has been developed to tackle antimicrobial resistances (AMR).
