Biography

Dr Surya Nepal is a Senior Principal Research Scientist at CSIRO Data61. He has been working at CSIRO since 2000. His main research interest is in the development and implementation of technologies in the area of cybersecurity. He obtained his Bachelor of Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Surat, India; his Master of Engineering from the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand; and his PhD from RMIT University, Australia. He has more than 300 publications to his credit. Many of his works are published in top international journals and conferences such as ACM CCS, NDSS, IEEE S&P, ASIA CCS, RAID, ACM MM, VLDB, ICDE, IEEE Transactions on Service Computing, IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems, ACM Transactions on Internet Technology, IEEE Transactions on Computers, Communications of the ACM and ACM Computing Survey. Some of his papers have received the best paper award at international conferences. His lifetime citation is 21777 (Google Scholar), with an h-index of 66 and an i10-index of 311. Dr Nepal has received several publications and invention awards at CSIRO.

Dr Nepal currently leads the Cybersecurity and Quantum Systems group at CSIRO's Data61, comprising over 50 research staff and over 40 research students, conducting research in different security aspects, including quantum-safe transition. He is a co-inventor of 8 patents in web services and security, and has edited three books and several conference proceedings. Dr Nepal serves as program chair and committee member in many international conferences and workshops. He has delivered talks/tutorials/keynotes on trusted distributed systems on national and international stages. He also serves as Interim Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Service Computing, and is an editorial board member of ACM Transactions on Internet Technology and Frontiers in Big Data: Cybersecurity and Privacy. He served as an editorial board member of IEEE Transactions on Dependable and Secure Computing,

Dr Nepal's research outcomes are accepted and adopted by researchers and industry in practice. This is demonstrated through (a) applying research outcomes by clients to solve practical problems, (b) licensing developed technologies to industry, and (c) demonstrating the use of developed technologies in practice. His research is supported by governments and industries (e.g., ARC, Aus-India Strategic Research Fund, US Army, Boeing, AFP, NSF, Home Affairs, NATO, CRC, etc.), obtained through competitive processes and totalling value over millions of dollars.

Dr Nepal was the theme leader and deputy research director of the Cyber Security Cooperative Research Centre (CRC). He currently holds the position of theme leader for the Responsible AI Research Centre (RAIR), a joint initiative of Data61 and UoA, an adjunct professor position at UNSW and an honorary Professor position at MQ University. He is a Fellow of IEEE.
