Biography
Dr Éva Plagányi leads research on the development of models to support the sustainable management of marine systems. She maintains an international reputation in stock assessment modelling, ecosystem modelling and management strategy evaluation (MSE), and a lot of her research focuses on climate impacts and adaptation. She is a Group Leader for Sustainable Marine Futures as well as Domain Leader for the Climate Impacts and Adaptation portfolio.
Her research interests centre on the biological modelling of marine and other renewable biological resources, and on the application of quantitative approaches to addressing general ecological questions. Her research is strongly inter-disciplinary, with extensive cross-over between Applied Mathematics and Ecology. She has 20 years' experience in the field of quantitative fisheries stock assessment, where her work focuses on developing an ecosystem approach to fisheries that ensures the sustainability and welfare of the entire ecosystem impacted by fishing activities. She led development of the MICE (Models for intermediate Complexity for Ecosystem assessment) approach and since 2009 has been leading marine fisheries research in Torres Strait, working closely with Traditional Owners. She has published more than 130 publications and her work underpins many management and policy decisions. She is also a Superstar of STEM and committed to public outreach to share research findings.
