Biography

Jean-Michel leads a team working at the interface of between software, data, and environmental modelling, in particular hydrology.

Jean-Michel has 20 years of experience in CSIRO Land and Water. Having a mixed background in civil and environmental engineering and software engineering, he has since contributed to projects at the interface of environmental modelling and software. He contributed to the Catchment Modelling Toolkit initiative and eWater through Cooperative Research Centres until 2010, notably the modelling engine under the eWater Source product. Over 2010-2020 he contributed to software activities and products under the Water Information Research Alliance (WIRADA) between CSIRO and the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. A highlight of these contributions is the ensemble streamflow forecasting software ecosystem known as SWIFT2, used in research and operations across these two organisations.

Jean-Michel has authored, led or contributed to several noteworthy open source software assets, listed in the "Related links" section below.

His recent or ongoing past research interest are:

  • Using contemporary machine learning software for environmental modelling
  • Software tools, patterns and practices sustaining provenance information for Reproducible Research
  • Leveraging cloud computing and web services as enhanced impact pathways for environmental data analytics and simulation
  • Interoperability between heterogenous software languages to combine high performance modelling engines and interactive usability for scientists and modellers from R, Python, etc.
  • Software architecture for ensemble simulation techniques formally estimating predictive uncertainty
  • Metaheuristics optimisation software and supervised machine learning
  • Software patterns for spatial-temporal environmental modelling frameworks
  • Hydrological prediction in ungauged basins
