Biography
Adam got his PhD from the Institute of Systematics and Evolution of Animals in Cracow (Poland) in 1982 working on the phylogeny and classification of cerylonid beetles (Cerylonidae). In 1993 he was awarded DSc in Entomology from the University of Wroclaw, and in 2000 he received the title Professor of Biological Sciences from the President of Polish Republic. From 1982 for almost 18 years he worked at the Institute of Zoology (Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw) as a Curator of Coleoptera, Director of Research and for the last 5 years as the Director of the Institute. In 1990-1991 he spent one year as a visiting Professor of Entomology at the Montana Sate University, Bozeman. In 1999-2000 he was appointed as the Professor of Biology at the University of Zielona Gora, before taking up his current position as a research scientist and curator at the Australian National Insect Collection (CSIRO).
Adam’s research is focused on the evolution and classification of beetles (Coleoptera), with particular interests in phylogeny of ladybirds (Coccinellidae), longhorn beetles (Cerambycidae), and classification of Mesozoic Polyphagan beetles from Northern China. He is the author of nearly 200 research publications and book chapters and author of four books on the phylogeny and classification of various beetles. Adam has supervised 6 PhD students, 3 Honours/Master students and multiple visiting students from Australia and Abroad. He is Visiting Professor at the Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou and collaborator of the College of Life Sciences at the Capital Normal University in Beijing.
