Biography

Sam is an exploration and mining geologist with expertise in base metal and gold mineral systems in sedimentary basins and regolith-dominated terranes. His research interests are broad but keys areas of focus are characterization of and genesis of large mineral systems; metal and trace element deportment in ore bodies; understanding the interface between geochemistry and geophysics in mineral exploration; development of new geochemical exploration tools; and Earth surface redox evolution in deep geological time. he is perhaps best known for his work on sediment-hosted zinc-lead and copper mineral systems, battery metal deposits (manganese, vanadium, cobalt), and microbe-metal interactions in the deep subsurface.
