Biography
Dr. Talamantes is an eDNA Data Specialist within the Integrated Data Systems (IDC) team at CSIRO’s National Collections and Marine Infrastructure (NCMI). She specialises in computational genomics, bioinformatics workflow design, and data standardisation to enable the publication and reuse of biodiversity data at national and global scales.
In her current role, Dr. Talamantes focuses on identifying challenges in the publication of environmental DNA (eDNA) data and developing modular, end-to-end workflows for transforming eDNA-derived outputs into standardised biodiversity records. Her work supports the integration and publication of Australian eDNA datasets to international platforms including OBIS, GBIF, and the Atlas of Living Australia (ALA), aligning national efforts with global data standards.
Dr. Talamantes collaborates with researchers, data engineers, and international working groups to map existing eDNA workflows, define metadata and data structure requirements, and design interoperable systems that connect sample collection, laboratory processing, bioinformatic analysis, and data publication. She contributes to the development of scalable, reproducible data pipelines and supports community adoption through stakeholder engagement, testing, and iterative refinement.
Previously, as a CERC Postdoctoral Fellow in the Digital and Genome Engineering Team, she led projects in computational genomics and machine learning, including antimicrobial resistance prediction from genomic data and bioinformatic workflows for allergenicity and virulence assessment in novel protein sources. She provided bioinformatic and metatranscriptomic support to cross-Research Unit initiatives such as “Snails as Vectors: Determining the Microbiome and Parasitome of Native and Invasive Snail Species in Australia.” She has extensive experience in high-performance computing, automated pipeline development, and multi-omics data integration, which underpins her current work in building robust, standards-compliant data publishing frameworks.
Her work bridges the gap between genomic data generation and biodiversity data systems, supporting Australia’s contribution to global initiatives in environmental monitoring, biosecurity, and sustainable ecosystem management.
