Biography
Dr Mark Thomas has almost 30 years of experience in land resource assessment in Australia and overseas. From a strong foundation in soil science and modern digital land evaluation, he innovates to deliver new science-based knowledge to land management challenges principally in areas of sustainable agriculture and natural resources. His research reduces uncertainty in land use decision-making, which translates to increased confidence on the part of planners and managers. He delivers this to a range of user levels and needs, including from regional policy support through to on-ground management choices.
Mark has experience in numerous project and objective settings. Examples include regional soil assessments for agricultural intensification opportunity for northern Australia; new land resource assessment systems with capability transfer to overseas research partners; the first Australian bedrock depth map to support strategic and modelling outcomes; land rehabilitation guidelines for the gas industry, and; landscape pedological research aimed at narrowing dryland farming yield gaps related to various soil constraints.
