Dr Matthew Taylor

Dr Matt Taylor's research interests include lipid and xenobiotic metabolism. He is currently working on a number of projects on both of these topics in CSIRO Land and Water.
Matt completed his Master of Philosophy on the interaction of xenobiotic metabolism genes and toxin exposure in Parkinson's disease as there is a growing occurrence of the association between pesticide exposure and the onset of Parkinson's disease in rural communities. His PhD investigated the role of the ubiquitin pathway in protein degradation and lysosomal trafficking with respect to neurotoxicity and neurodegeneration.
After joining CSIRO in 2006 he has worked on various projects including the discovery and characterisation of a unique family of enzymes that utilise a riboflavin like cofactor, F420, to catalyse the reduction of a number of recalcitrant substrates such as aflatoxin.
With the mass spectrometry capability at CSIRO Black Mountain Laboratories, Matt is conducting both Metabolomics, lipidomics and proteomics studies on a number of organisms, food products and ecosystems. He works with colleagues in other CSIRO Business Units such as Agriculture and Food, Oceans and Atmospheres, and Health and Biosecurity. He investigates biochemical and metabolic in a range of organisms including plants, mammals, insects and single cellular organisms including bacteria and Thraustochytrids. With colleagues within CSIRO Land and Water he is applying this capability to help solve complex issues in environmental and industrial ecosystems .
