Biography
Andy has enjoyed a full and varied career over his 30 years spent in the natural sciences. Originally obtaining a degree and Ph.D. in marine biology, he then journeyed through the development of molecular biology, genomic and biotechnological solutions for the natural environment, including environmental monitoring, protection and clean up. More recently his work has focussed on the democratisation of science approaches through Citizen Science projects and developing environmental solutions using 3D bioprinting.
With a range of skills in science and an eye for commercial solutions, his work has spanned the globe. A large portion of Andy's career has been spent at the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology in Oxford developing a range of molecular based technologies for environmental research. These include large scale monitoring strategies for the microbial biodiversity within UK soils through to biosensing reagents for toxic discharges, buried munitions and plant stress responses. In 2011 he relocated to Western Australia as the 10th Premier's Fellow. His work in Australia has focussed on biotechnological approaches to mine site rehabilitation and developing advanced level Biotechnology courses with an equal focus on both science and business training.
Andy has always been a passionate communicator of science and a life long advocate for inspiring the next generation of scientists. His work in this area includes the world's first soil sampling Citizen Science program 'MicroBlitz' to decode the West Australian soil microbiome as well as collaborating with Nobel Laureate Prof. Barry Marshall to mentor emerging science leaders within the Barry Marshall-MicroBlitz Internship.
