Biography

Ran Wei is a Senior Engineer at CSIRO, and a member of the Efficient Computer Vision team within the Imaging and Computer Vision Group. He received his Ph.D. in Engineering (Robotics) from the Australian National University in 2006. He joined National ICT Australia (NICTA) in 2007 and transitioned to CSIRO in 2016.

His research focuses on hyperspectral spectroscopy and imaging, neural networks, and computer vision, with an emphasis on robotics applications and integrated hardware–software system development. He has over 15 years of experience in software engineering and applied research. He also has deep expertise in 3D component design for customised computer vision systems, spanning both terrestrial and underwater environments.

Currently, his work centres on the development of computer vision systems, including both hardware platforms and software solutions for real-world deployment. His recent projects include a high-resolution, multi-camera platform for insect specimen digitisation, and the development of large-scale deep learning models for wound recognition using images captured from consumer devices such as laptops and mobile phones.
