Biography
Dr William Woodgate is a CSIRO Office of the Chief Executive (OCE) postdoctoral research fellow with Land & Water. He is currently researching the measurement and modelling of canopy function and structure using a novel combination of eddy covariance measurements with hyperspectral, thermal and laser scanning instruments operating simultaneously and in situ to quantify and reduce uncertainty, and improve land surface data products for ecosystem process modelling.
Dr Woodgate is the principle investigator of the Australian Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network (TERN) OzFlux Tumbarumba research site. Now in its 16th year it is one of Australia’s longest continuously running flux tower sites and rated equal second globally for verification of environmental satellite products by the Austrian Bureau of Meteorology (ZAMG) representing a European consortium of research organisations. Tumbarumba partners with FLUXNET and SPECNET, two global networks for monitoring water, carbon and energy exchanges between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere. Partnership agreements with NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) govern data exchange in support of satellite product verification.
Dr Woodgate completed his PhD at RMIT University under two scholarships; the Australian Postgraduate Award, and a top-up scholarship from the Australia New Zealand Cooperative Research Centre for Spatial Information, with additional support from the Victorian Department of Environment and Primary Industries. His PhD research examined the characterisation of forested ecosystems using a range of ground-based sensors, which led to the creation of one of the first fully metric 3D Australian forest models, built in partnership with University College London and the Queensland Department of Science, Information Technology and Innovation. He also worked with TERN participating in field campaigns in a number of Australian ecosystems; Robson Creek tropical rainforest and Karawatha forest (QLD), Watts Creek tall mountain ash forest and Rushworth woodland (VIC). He worked part-time with AAM Group Pty Ltd, one of Australia’s largest geospatial technology companies, whilst completing his Bachelor of Geomatic Engineering at the University of Melbourne (Hons Class 1) and later as part of his postgraduate studies.
Dr Woodgate is a member of the international Terrestrial Laser Scanning Research Coordination Network, led by Prof Emeritus Alan Strahler (Boston University), whose aim is to further the understanding and application of laser scanning for woody vegetation characterisation. He has co-authored 12 international journal articles, 11 refereed conference papers and 2 book chapters.
