Biography
With a background in civil engineering, Dr John Awad has developed a multidisciplinary research profile in water and environmental engineering, including topics in waste management, water characterization, water and wastewater treatment, and water resources. His research focuses on the fate of environmental organic contaminants, employing both laboratory- and field-scale investigations to evaluate their removal in engineered systems. Dr Awad has pioneered innovative nature-based solutions, including the use of floating wetlands for managing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in wastewater and urban water sources. He is also investigating emerging materials and technologies for the design of surface and near-surface radioactive waste disposal systems, with the aim of improving containment integrity and environmental safety. Prior to joining CSIRO, Dr Awad was a Research Associate and Lecturer in the Department of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at the University of South Australia.
