Biography

I am interested in environmental and natural resource economics and I really enjoy undertaking research in interdisciplinary teams. Broadly, I seek to engage in research guided by the question: how do we use and manage natural resources to achieve environmental and social sustainability in a time of significant environmental change? This includes work in two main areas: (1) understanding how natural resource use consequences are understood and experienced by different stakeholders and thus understand the incentives to disrupt or maintain the status quo; and (2) the effectiveness of different information, policies or other (dis)incentives to encourage alternative resource use decisions.

Currently I am a Postdoctoral Fellow working on CSIRO's Valuing Sustainability Future Science Platform. In this role my research is assessing the centrality of place in engagements with land sector sustainability investments, policies, and markets, and expanding the information used in sustainability investment decisions beyond the cost-effectiveness of an environmental outcome. An area of growing interest is the relationship between social sustainability and environmental sustainability and the identification and operationalisation of meaningful social sustainability conditions and indicators (mainly jobs and workforce) for sustainability reporting requirements and decision-making related to sustainable agriculture and land restoration. A link to my main project ("Valuing local provenance and place-based economies in natural capital and low carbon markets and industries") is at the bottom of this page.

I have also worked on research:
(1) related to carbon farming adoption and the trade-offs between greenhouse gas mitigation and other objectives for Australian grain growers (2013-2016, at The University of Western Australia) and identifying and describing the evidence base for agricultural management practices that sequester carbon on farms, and their co-benefits (2021-2022, at The University of Adelaide).
(3) concerned with understanding the economic foundations of the concept of a social licence to operate, with particular focus applied to the mechanism being used to highlight market and government failures in the agricultural and energy industries (2018-2021, at The University of Adelaide).
(3) designed to improve the profitability and sustainability of vegetable industries in Southeast Asia (2017-2018, at The University of Adelaide).
