Biography
Darren Engwirda is a geophysical fluid dynamicist and computational mathematics researcher specialising in the development and analysis of Earth System models. His research is focused on understanding the behaviour of the world's oceans across scales --- building and using numerical models to resolve interactions between global circulation, regional seas and coastal systems. He is the author of numerous papers and software focused on the use of models and numerical methods that leverage variable resolution techniques to capture the physics of environmental systems at multiple scales of interest, from highly resolved coastal hazards to evolving climate stressors.
He is currently a developer of CSIRO's Environmental Modelling Suite (EMS), having previously contributed to the US DoE's Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) where his work focused on understanding coastal threats and change. His ongoing research aims to improve our understanding and management of Australia's shelf and coastal ecosystems through high-resolution numerical modelling and analysis.
