Biography
Stano is a Principal Research Scientist in the Cyber-Physical Systems Research Program at Data61. His main interests lie in algorithms, machine learning, mathematical optimisation, and architecting of complex software systems, as the means to enable fleets of robots to operate autonomously in large unstructured environments. He is currently the Leader of the Robotic Perception and Autonomy Group, managing teams of bright researchers, engineers, and students.
Prior to joining CSIRO, Stano was a Member of Technical Staff at Cerebras Systems, a semiconductor company based in California, USA, that builds computer systems for artificial intelligence applications. There, he developed methods for compiling deep learning models and contributed to the architecture of the compiler stack. He was also as a Research Scientist at Facebook, where he developed models and production systems for user understanding and language models for language identification and transliteration.
Stano received his doctoral degree from the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University and Master’s and undergraduate degrees from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He received the Dimitris Chorafas foundation award for his Master’s research at MIT.
