Biography
As a Senior Experimental Scientist in the Integrated Agricultural Systems program based at Waite Campus in SA, I have a key role in productive project teams across several sites, contributing project leadership, specialist expertise in spatial analysis, development of analytical software tools, statistical analysis and modelling, as well as technical capability in sensors and instrumentation.
Professional Areas
- Spatial analysis and statistical modelling applied to agriculture and climate research
- Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Spatial Analysis
- Programming and scripting (Python, R) to automate data analysis and processing workflows
- Configure equipment/sensors and develop software to automate field data collection
Current Roles
-
Yield gap assessment
This work quantifies and investigates causes of the gap between actual farmer yields and modelled potential yields. This work raises awareness of the potential for productivity gains in cropping systems and provides a benchmark against which production can be assessed. Yield gaps can be assessed at paddock to national scale. The Australian yield gap website (yieldgapaustralia.com.au) is one part of my work -
Spatio-temporal climate analysis
This research area develops new insights into climatic factors such as frost, heat stress and aridity at farm to regional and continental scale, looking at historical trends or future climate scenarios. This provides valuable information to growers and producers to inform management of crop and livestock production in the face of climatic risk. -
Develop software tools for precision agriculture (PA) and precision viticulture (PV)
PA/PV seeks to increase efficiency of use of crop inputs (e.g. fertilizer) and profitability (e.g. through selective harvesting) through improving understanding and management of spatial variability at block/paddock scale in viticultural, broad acre cropping and sugarcane production systems.
