Biography

Tung is an experienced scientist with strong background in aquaculture and entrepreneur mindset thanks to his proactive engagement with the aquaculture industry. Tung obtained his PhD degree in Marine Biology from Griffith University in 2002 and have 28 years of experience in aquaculture R&D with strong focus on shrimp farming, new species, water quality management and biofloc technology. Networking and partnership development with the aquaculture industry have been Tung's passion over the years. Tung has led more than 20 international projects. His success rate for grant application is close to 96%. Tung had served Asian Pacific Chapter - World Aquaculture Society (WAS) as President from 2006 - 2008, Skretting Vietnam as Scientific Advisor from 2012 to 2016 and Executive Secretary of Vietnam Fisheries & Aquaculture Institutions Network (ViFINET) from 2004 to 2007.

Regarding industry development Tung is highly interested in innovative methods including the use of aquaculture big data to improve aquaculture production efficiencies. Have been working extensively with aquaculture enterprises and farmers in Vietnam for 15 years before joining CSIRO Aquaculture. Tung is a strong believer in the "work to learn and learn to better work" philosophy. Tung has led the development of
+ In-pond floating raceways for intensive fingerling production of marine finfish (Hoang & Burke, 2008): commercially tested for barramundi, snapper, groupers, cobia, snubnose pompano with the highest standing biomass of 120 kg/m3.
+ Semi-biofloc technology for whiteleg shrimp farming (Hoang & Le, 2018): simple outdoor system that produces 35 - 40 tons/ha/crop with high profitability; standard crop duration: 85 - 90 days; harvest size: 30s-40s tails/kg.
+ Intensive farming technology for black tiger prawn P. monodon that yield 2.0 kg/m2 after 150 days from stocking of PL15-18 and requires limited water exchange.

At CSIRO Aquaculture Tung is leading international/internal projects that help (i) transforming P. monodon farming in all production stages (hatchery, nursery and grow-out), (ii) improving/promoting natural farming of the black tiger shrimp, (iii) advancing production technologies for mud crabs, marine polychaete and Artemia, and (iv) developing software and assessment tools for shrimp farming.
