Biography
Jens Klump is a geochemist by training and Group Leader Exploration Through Cover in the Mineral Resources unit of CSIRO. Jens earned degrees in geology and in oceanography from the University of Cape Town (UCT) and received his PhD in marine geology from the University of Bremen, Germany, where he applied methods from geochemical exploration to palaeoceanography to reconstruct oceanographic and climatic changes along the Chilean coast at the end of the last ice-age.
Jens’ work focuses on data in minerals exploration, both from a data analysis and from a data logistics perspective. Over the past 22 years, Jens has been at the forefront of earth science informatics, where his broad experience in geology and computer sciences allows him to bridge between the two disciplines and identify information technology solutions that could potentially be applied to geosciences questions.
In the 2000s, Jens was involved in establishing formal and technical mechanisms for data publication and citation and later transferred these principles to publication and citation of software and a global identifier system for geological samples. Later he became involved in designing and building research data infrastructures and virtual research environments for geoscience projects. Among these are high-performance computing for geophysics, cloud-computing for virtual research environments, environmental sensor networks, and enterprise data management systems. In his work on data infrastructures, Jens covers the entire chain of digital value creation from data acquisition to data analysis.
Since joining CSIRO in 2014, Jens has established a data science and software engineering team, investigating the application of simulation, network analysis, data mining, machine learning, natural language processing, and geostatistical techniques to minerals exploration.
Jens is the President of the International Generic Sample Number Organisation (IGSN e.V.) and President of the Earth and Space Sciences Division of the European Geosciences Union.
Other Interests
Jens has attained a 2nd Dan in karate, loves music, and is interested in rail transport technology.
