Biography
Jens Klump is Group Leader for Exploration Through Cover in CSIRO’s Mineral Resources unit, where he leads a data science and software engineering team focused on data‑driven minerals exploration. His work spans data analytics, digital infrastructure, and end‑to‑end data workflows, applying techniques such as simulation, machine learning, natural language processing, network analysis, and geostatistics to exploration challenges.
With more than 20 years’ experience in earth science informatics, Jens works at the intersection of geoscience and information technology. He has contributed to data and software citation frameworks, global identifier systems for geological samples, and the design of large‑scale geoscience data infrastructures and virtual research environments, covering the full digital value chain from data acquisition to analysis.
Jens is trained as a geochemist, with degrees in geology and oceanography from the University of Cape Town and a PhD in marine geology from the University of Bremen. His doctoral research applied geochemical exploration methods to palaeoceanography to reconstruct oceanographic and climatic change along the Chilean coast at the end of the last ice age.
He is President of the International Generic Sample Number Organisation (IGSN e.V.) and a former President of the Earth and Space Science Informatics Division of the European Geosciences Union.
Other Interests
Jens has a 2nd Dan in both Wado Ryu and Wado Kai karate, loves art and music, and is interested in rail transport technology.
